South Africa Kickstarts Literacy Project

The year 2023 has started in earnest for WFWP- South Africa.  After a break of about two months, in line with the country school calendar, we started the month in March with a planning meeting on 04/03/2023 followed by the start of the Mmangwana Mobile Library Project the following weekend.

The children in the community had been eager to start the new year.  They had been knocking at the door of Mrs. Mositoane, the main project coordinator who lives in the area.  It was all happy faces on the day.  We were hoping to have about 40 children in attendance but 70 showed up on the day.  These were both returning learners and new ones. We had set the day for enrollment, general administration, and play as a way of kickoff the year.

Learning had to be part of the agenda of the day because the learners we just so eager to start. We had the pleasure of being joined by the Chairperson of the School Governing Body (our project partner) on the day.  He understands the value of the work we do but is also aware of our financial challenges.  Using his relationship with a local retailer, he was able to source a food donation to assist us in augmenting the food we give to the learners for the next 2-3 weeks.

We also had a few of the parents coming through on the day.  They assisted with the enrolment process.  Some of them came prepared to pay the R50 annual fee that is being levied starting this year.  They understand that for this partnership to work, commitment has to come from all sides. This was a happy start for all of us.  Thanks to our Founders and WFWPI for enabling us to impact our children’s lives.
