Empowering women into small trades in the community

By: Marthe Whyte

WFWP- Ghana once organized a character education in the community of Manchie in |the Greater Accra region. Following the response of the participants, our team was encouraged to hold other activities with the youth of the community. We gave character education on the importance of living a pure life before marriage to the youth of the same community and then proceeded to educate the students of their community school on the HIV/Aids and other STDs. Following all these success stories, the women of the community decided to register with WFWP-Ghana as associate members. This creates more bound with them an some of them requested that we empower them financially to start up small businesses to support their families. WFWP-Ghana therefore launched a small loan scheme, refundable after a period of three months. We begun a pilot project with eight (8) and it was successful. A second batch of nine (9) women also received the loan and finished the repayment.

During this event we are reporting on, it was time for the third batch of nine (9) more women to receive the small loan. On that day, as the women gathered, a team of three Executives of WF-Ghana (Marthe Whyte, President/ Emielia Adofo, Vice President and Vivian Nkasia, General secretary) met the women in the community. They were first of all educated on their responsibilities as women in their homes and it was also a moment to socialize with them and listen to their issues and struggles. They were then advised on what to do to handle the situation they face at home. We then proceeded in presenting the loans to the recipients and we also celebrated the birthday of three ladies born in March. Pictures were taken to mark the event. It was a real success. At the moment, we are preparing to grant the loan to a fourth bath of fifteen (15) new women in early April 2025.
